Rolf’s Lake is always a great favourite with our club mainly because of the big carp that are usually accessible to close in tactics. The weather man promised us a nice sunny day which it was for about an hour but then rapidly went downhill to wet and windy again, that meteorologist needs shooting for getting it wrong so often. Sixteen anglers turned out to fish this five hour match and after sorting out some whole nets (most of their nets had holes in them some of them big holes) we all settled into our swims. At the start Bernie Cullinane and Ron Smith and Paul Sheldrick and others started on the feeder and pellet or meat, others chose the long pole and pellet or corn or maggot to attract some skimmers or Carp. It was Bernie Cullinane who had the first fish and indeed had five on the trot on feeder and pellet while Ron Smith on the same tactics hooked a Carp on his 4lb line which took him over an hour to land, but it was big. Paul Sheldrick on the opposite side of the lake was on same tactics to land Carp while his boy Joe on peg 22 was on pole and pellet also catching large Carp. Three hours in it looks like Bernie is still in the lead with Ron Smith coming up fast, saying that Paul English was catching steadily on favoured peg 34 by the pads most of the rest of us although we caught fish and most of us had at least one Carp kind of struggled to amass a weight. The last hour at Rolf’s is usually the best with the carp coming into the inside line and Joe Sheldrick made up a lot of ground in that time overtaking his dad Paul. Top place was taken by Bernie Cullinane with 57-01-00 all on feeder and pellet, second was Ron “Chubby” Smith with 54-15-00 also on feeder and pellet. Third was Joe “the boy” Sheldrick with 54-04-00 on pole and pellet. We don’t have a specimen fish in the winter but if a good specimen is caught it goes towards the individual specimen fish trophies, Pete “the fing” had a cracking Perch of 02-04-00. Well Pete the perch trophy has been won by a smaller fish before so you could be in with a chance. All in all this was a good match with no one blanking and five weights over 50lbs.
